Here are some of the tools I have used, a surface height gage and dial caliper.  The dial caliper was very necessary to check tubing and to machine the custom post to hold the BB.  The height gage is much better than a ruler for measuring distance up from the table.  This allows me to be sure my spacers and shims are the correct thickness to hold all the tubes in the same plane.
